East meets west… meets north… meets south. Here in sunny Santa Monica, many people have been exposed to the healthful benefits of including eastern medicine in western life. By bringing stillness to our crazy lives through meditation, or infusing our highly processed western diets with fresh, seasonal foods, people in the west are adopting facets of eastern culture that benefit their mind, body and spirit. One World Health Project was founded with the ideal of bringing this knowledge to other parts of the Los Angeles area where these practices aren’t well known- areas where there are no farmer’s markets, areas where meditation isn’t taught in schools, areas where there aren’t 3 different donation based yoga studios on every block. One World Health Project has chosen to go into those neighborhoods where the need is great, and the resources limited. But now is the time to step it up a notch. We are going past the confines of the Los Angeles city limit, past the borders of the United States, and into the southern hemisphere. OWHP embarks on its first international outreach project… to the Masai Mara, in Kenya, Africa.

There are no accidents in life… no coincidences. The energy you put out into the world comes back to you in unexpected but related ways. The steps made by OWHP to reach out to those in need has thus manifested in this amazing opportunity to delve into the culture of the Masai warriors, and teach them a bit of the benefits of Oriental Medicine. It started by the chance meeting of Jackson Njapit, otherwise known as “Action Jackson”. Jackson is a Masai Warrior who sacrificed everything to become a Nurse Practitioner so that he could provide health care services to 10,000 Masai people. He came to the US to get a piloting license for a Hot Air Balloon, so that he could earn money in the tourism industry to subsidize his clinic. There are limited resources in the Mara, and many people suffering from HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Bacterial and Fungal Disorders, Arthritis and injury-related pain. Although Jackson has made a huge difference in the lives of his people, there are some patients that he cannot help due to the constraints of living in such a remote and under-developed location such as the Mara. When he met some of the OWHP members, he immediately wanted to know when we could come help train him and the other healthcare workers beside him in simple acupuncture protocols that can bring relief to some of these patients that currently have no recourse for aid. Thus the journey begins, as 5 OWHP members painstakingly prepare to journey to the Masai Mara in Kenya. As we speak, countless hours are being dedicated to the preparation for this trip: fundraising, preparation of clinical and educational materials, working with the Kenyan government to assure safety and efficiency of the trip… the list goes on and on. If you feel called to help OWHP in this international mission, please make a tax-deductible donation on our website at www.owhp.org or contact us at info@owhp.org. Join the movement to unite the world in better health!

On Wednesday, March 17th, One World Health Project and volunteers went into Shenandoah Elementary School to teach three classes of fourth graders about the power of connecting to nature.

Led by Camille Harris, the hour long class was an introduction to Chinese Medicine as part of their Health unit in school. The children had an opportunity to see acupuncture needles, to touch and taste herbal medicines such as Gou Ji Berries (Gou Ji Zi), Ginger (Sheng Jiang), and Chrysanthamum (Ju Hua). Eyes and mouths were agape when they saw the cicada skeletons (Chan Tui), and to find out that these little insects served as excellent medicine for itchy rashes and other skin disorders. The kids greatly enjoyed watching their teacher receive an acupuncture treatment from Camille, and were amused and surprised to hear that the needles not only were painless, but actually felt deeply relaxing!

Besides getting an introduction to some of the Chinese Medicine tools to treat disease, the kids also had an opportunity to learn about the three essential practices for good health: movement, meditation and nutrition. These three crucial aspects of preventative medicine are also termed the Three Pillars of Health. With the help of Meghan Fremon, Megan Joyce, and Sarah Nargiso, Camille taught the children about the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Together kids and teachers made connections between the various elements and the kind of energy associated with that element. They discussed the importance of eating natural foods that grow in each season, and how eating natural foods supports the body to perform at its best. The kids got a bit rowdy when it was time to explore movement, but soon the room was completely silent as everyone focused on lifting their arms to the air to perform the first Qi Gong exercise as part of the Eight Pieces of Brocade. This set of eight Qi Gong exercises is used to alleviate stress, increase energy, and harmonize the body’s organ systems. The silence and focus of the children was a sight to behold and a sound to savor for their instructors. To finish the Three Pillars of Health, the children engaged in a discussion about meditation, and all the forms that meditation can take. Camille taught the importance of stillness for the body, and how that can be achieved by the traditional seated meditation, through slow walking meditation, or by practicing mindful breathing. The class was deemed quite a success, and the Shenandoah Elementary teachers were excited to make OWHP’s curriculum a regular part of their Health unit. If you are interested in having OWHP teach about Chinese Medicine and the three pillars of Health at your child’s school, camp, or daycare facility, please contact us at info@owhp.org.
